Time Magazine put out its list of the best inventions of 2016 last week and Sony’s PlayStation VR held a spot at number six. Alongside groundbreaking inventions like Nike’s self-tying shoes and car tires that spin in every direction, the PlayStation VR was honored for being an affordable alternative to an otherwise expensive gaming experience. Where other headsets cost more and require a more powerful gaming computer, Time pointed out that Sony’s VR headset “is designed to work with a console that millions of people already own: the PlayStation 4.”
The PlayStation VR headset retails for $399.99. By contrast, the Oculus Rift headset starts at $599.99 and requires a system running a minimum NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD R9 290 graphics card, an Intel i5-4590 processor, and 8GB or more of RAM. And the HTC Vive, partnered with Valve, starts at $799.99 and has roughly the same base system requirements as the Oculus Rift. To be fair, the $799.99 price tag from HTC includes everything but the computer to get you started – the headset, controllers, two base stations (trackers to tell the headset and controllers where you are in a room), and other accessories. And with Oculus, once you add the price of the Oculus Touch for $199.99, you’re looking at about the same price.
There are a few extra costs to the PlayStation VR as well though – the PlayStation 4 Camera and PlayStation Move Motion Controllers. If you have a PlayStation 4 but didn’t opt to buy the camera, you are going to need it to use PlayStation VR and it will cost you an extra $39.99 – $59.99. The Move controllers are an additional $97 for a set of two. So, all-in-all, the total cost of the PlayStation VR system racks up to around $557 (minus the cost of the PlayStation 4 console itself). But if you keep you eyes peeled for some bundle deals, you might be able to get that cost down a few dollars. And with Black Friday and Cyber Monday on the horizon, you might be able to find some sales you just can’t resist!
